Whole-home surge protection

Whole-home surge protection

A surge protective device at your panel helps protect furnaces, appliances, EV chargers and electronics from spikes coming in on the line or starting inside the house.

What it protects

Today’s furnaces, refrigerators, washers and ranges all have circuit boards in them, and a power strip does nothing for hardwired equipment. A panel-mounted device limits surges for every circuit in the home. It is usually a short job and pairs well with a panel upgrade, a new charger or a new build.

What it does not do

No surge protector can stop a direct lightning strike. A panel device is one layer. For computers and TVs, keep good plug-in protectors as a second layer. We also check your grounding and bonding when we install, because a surge device depends on them to work.

Already had a strike?

We inspect and repair lightning damage, including breakers, receptacles and failed surge devices, and we can write up the electrical damage for your insurance claim.

“Their pricing was fair, communication was excellent, and the customer service was exemplary from start to finish.”

Common questions

Is a surge protector required by code?

National code has required them on dwelling services in recent editions, and Iowa’s adopted rules on this have been changing. We confirm what applies to your job. Either way, it is inexpensive protection for what is in your home.

How long does a surge device last?

Devices wear out as they absorb surges. Most have an indicator light that shows when replacement is needed. We can show you where to check yours.

Will it fit my panel?

Most panels can take one, either as a breaker-style device or a unit mounted next to the panel. If yours is full or outdated, we will tell you the options.
